Language Development

Language develops at different paces for every child. Here are the stages of language development and typical age ranges each child should reach for each milestone.

Intelligibility

What is intelligibility? It is the ability for others to understand what the child is saying. The child's speech may not be in full sentences or grammatically correct, but the message is successfully communicated and understood by others. A child's speech intelligibility rate may vary depending on the listener's relation to the child (i.e., caregivers, siblings, relatives, peers, teachers, SLPs, strangers) as well as the age and developmental stage of the child.

Milestones of Language Development

The following slides are expressive-receptive language milestones according to ASHA. The "Hearing and Understanding" column refers to receptive language, and the "Talking" column refers to expressive language.
